BACK in May 2008, Kevin Phillips had a prescient piece in Harper's about the phony government numbers on which so many economic decisions are made.
Phillips isn't some lefty, by the way. He seems to have a knack for predicting political trends and occurrences. The Wall Street Journal once described him as “the leading conservative electoral analyst — the man who invented the Sun Belt, named the New Right, and prophesied ‘The Emerging Republican Majority’ in 1969.”
Of course, we usually pay no attention until the predicted actually happens — then there's nothing to do but try to pick up the pieces.
"bar code" (2004), created with spray paint and masking tape. Not a very good photo but you can get the idea if you stare at it long enough.
