Good piece. What Brooks didn't mention was that Washington was a slaveowner who would shuttle his slaves to and from Mt. Vernon to avoid the law that prohibited keeping slaves in D.C. longer than six months. But let's not judge lest we be judged. The context was that Washington was in good company with founders like Jefferson, who also owned slaves, and others of the founding generation who failed to end an institution that could only have ended in Civil War. Even the great abolitionist John Quincy Adams was the guy who signed the law that left slavery in D.C. Publicus
.. grew up on the family farm, received a degree from the University of Illinois, worked a summer in Montana, spent more than three years in the U.S. Army, more than three years working on an English-language newspaper in Tokyo, a year with the Voice of America, and then re-joined the local newspaper where I earlier met my wife, Janet. Retired in 2001 and now enjoy doing encaustics, collage, and cold wax and oil.

Nice setup! Love the old picture hanging on the wall...family or antique?
