THE New York Times' in-house conservative, David Brooks, writes a fine column on the lost virtues of dignity and rectitude.

  1. Good piece. What Brooks didn't mention was that Washington was a slaveowner who would shuttle his slaves to and from Mt. Vernon to avoid the law that prohibited keeping slaves in D.C. longer than six months. But let's not judge lest we be judged. The context was that Washington was in good company with founders like Jefferson, who also owned slaves, and others of the founding generation who failed to end an institution that could only have ended in Civil War. Even the great abolitionist John Quincy Adams was the guy who signed the law that left slavery in D.C.
