PERHAPS I've mentioned this, but it took Western Europe (which doesn't include Britain) about 2,000 years to become more or less civilized and it may take this country about the same number of years.
Western Europe as civilized??? Don't forget how rough and tumble The British House of Parliament still is, or the labor riots in France, or the neo-nazi violence against Turkish immigrants in Germany, or soccer hooligans!
I didn't say "civilized." I said "more or less" civilized — after 2,000 years of religious strife and innumerable wars, including two world wars. But two humanly relevant factors by which one can judge the level of civilization is the provision of universal health care and efficient and comfortable public transportation. By these two factors, we have a long, long way to go.
.. grew up on the family farm, received a degree from the University of Illinois, worked a summer in Montana, spent more than three years in the U.S. Army, more than three years working on an English-language newspaper in Tokyo, a year with the Voice of America, and then re-joined the local newspaper where I earlier met my wife, Janet. Retired in 2001 and now enjoy doing encaustics, collage, and cold wax and oil.
